As someone who works on a radio breakfast show, I’ve lost count of how many times it’s fallen to my co-host and I to wake up our listeners with heart wrenching news.
“There’s been another terrorist attack…” is a phrase I never want to repeat, on air or off air.
But one thing is for sure, it’s in the darkest night that the stars shine most brightly.
Today we woke up to the news that a 48 year old male, drove a van into a crowd of Muslim worshipers, leaving their mosque late last night.
However the small detail that most news outlets haven’t focused on, is the fact that a nearby Imam named Mohammed Mahmoud, potentially saved this terrorists’ life.
Let’s just be clear… this is a Muslim leader who has just experienced this man attack his fellow Muslims. His response in the heat of the moment is to rescue this terrorist. He prevented other people from attacking him and harming him. Mohammed saved a man who wanted to kill him.
As a Christian I obviously have differing views to Mohammed, we would no doubt disagree about a lot of things, but these disagreements are to be explored in the context of kindness and respect, not through acts of violence and terrorism.
Mr Mahmoud seems to understand this more than most of us – certainly if online comment threads are anything to go by these days.
I hope that more Christians can behave like Mohammed Mahmoud. SCRAP THAT – I hope that more people (those who are religious and those who aren’t) can behave like Mohammed.
