OK so truth be told… I’m not the biggest Katy Perry fan – her, often irresponsible, lyrics and somewhat generic music just don’t scratch where I itch… sorry Katy!

However listening to her most recent song; Chained to the Rhythm my ears pricked up.

Have you noticed the lyrics?

It’s a gutsy song, challenging our Western comfort – reminding us that whilst we are comfortably living in our bubble, bubble – the world is in trouble, trouble.

But the bit of the song that grabbed me most is the rap, courtesy of Skip Marley, (grandson of Bob). Check out these words:

“It is my desire, break down the walls to connect, inspire,
Up in your high place, liars, time is ticking for the empire
The truth they feed is feeble
As so many times before
They greed over the people
They stumbling and fumbling, and we about to riot
They woke up, they woke up the lions”

It sounds a little bit like Marley is warning that calamity is coming to those who’ve spent the years exploiting the poor and vulnerable to their own gain.

Interestingly there’s a strikingly similar passage in the Bible – it can be found in James chapter 5:1-6

“Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days. Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you.”

When the bible starts making an appearance in the charts you can bet your bottom dollar God’s trying to get your attention.

You now have 2 choices:

1.) You can listen up

2.) You can “put your rose coloured glasses on, and party on!”
